Anne Sexton - Just Once

Just once I knew what life was for.
In Boston, quite suddenly, I understood;
walked there along the Charles River,
watched the lights copying themselves,
all neoned and strobe-hearted, opening
their mouths as wide as opera singers;
counted the stars, my little campaigners,
my scar daisies, and knew that I walked my love
on the night green side of it and cried
my heart to the eastbound cars and cried
my heart to the westbound cars and took
my truth across a small humped bridge
and hurried my truth, the charm of it, home
and hoarded these constants into morning
only to find them gone.

I think that your mood is proper codnrseiing the proximity of anniversaries and what you have been reading. I agree with knifecakes that the Sillmarilion is a good read. However, at a time when I was just recovering from losses worse than I ever thought I could survive, its opening passages opened unexpected floodgates. Probably more about me than the book.At least be sure to finish the appendices to LOTR and that very very very last moment when They went in, and Sam shut the door, but even as he did so, he heard suddenly, deep and unstilled, the sigh and murmur of the Sea upon the shores of Middle-earth.
