A conversational love-letter of a poem, Rich here animates the lives of
women who lived passion for each other in the past, as a way to validate
and praise that love today. A usable, political past shows itself here, and
despite its poetic hestitancies, recovers for us something of the history
of intimacies that patriarchy usually sweeps under the rug. It's a poem
that points us toward the voices nobody ever listens to.

This poem is about one of the most powerful stories in all of the art
world, a genius artist's early death in childbirth. It rival's the death of
Emily Bronte at 30. To even attempt such a subject takes boldness and
love.Rich often writes about women in the shadows of the masculine world,
the muscle world, but she falls short in her own power. Not much to
remember here.
