Biography of Weldon Kees

Weldon Kees

Weldon Kees (1914 - 1955)

Harry Weldon Kees (February 24, 1914- presumed dead July 18, 1955) was an American poet, critic, novelist and short story writer.

He was born in Beatrice, Nebraska. He was educated at Doane College, the University of Missouri and the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1935. He then wrote for Federal Writers' Project in Lincoln, Nebraska. He moved to Denver and a job as librarian in 1937, where he married.

He was in New York from 1943 to 1950, heavily involved in literary journalism. From 1950 to his presumed death in 1955 he was in San Francisco, involved in many ventures but becoming a prey to mental illness. It is assumed, although his body was not found, that he jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge, where his car was abandoned on July 18 1955.
