Shel Silverstein - Bear In There

There's a Polar Bear
In our Frigidaire--
He likes it 'cause it's cold in there.
With his seat in the meat
And his face in the fish
And his big hairy paws
In the buttery dish,
He's nibbling the noodles,
He's munching the rice,
He's slurping the soda,
He's licking the ice.
And he lets out a roar
If you open the door.
And it gives me a scare
To know he's in there--
That Polary Bear
In our Fridgitydaire.

To me, this poem is about having an imagination. I think the poet chooses to write about a polar bear because they live in a cold climate so he puts the polar bear in the freezer. He is having FUN with the reader! I really like that he invents some of his own words to write the poem putting his signature on it. The polar bear becomes like a human because he is eating the rice and using the butter. It also reminds me of what you think might happen when you go out for the day and leave the pets at home. Did the cats play dress up or did the dogs play cards? What do animals do when we are not at home? Are they really sleeping? It makes you wonder. Shel has many poems and stories about what kids like to do. We are all kids at heart so there is no shame in admitting that these poems are wonderful. The rhyme scheme of the poem is musical and reminds me of music played at a carousel. Come on, it is important to have an imagination.
