The poet is using a metaphor of a baseball game between two uncoached boys
to represent the exchange of a poem between the poet and a reader.
The poet using all tones and styles to write a poem in order to convey his
thoughts to the reader as same as the baseball player using all hands to
hit a ball to the catcher.
The ball can flying high or low cause the catcher jump or down to catch the
ball as same as a poem can make the reader happy or sad. Sometimes after
reading a poem the reader can cry or laugh.
The batter can hit the ball in a tricky manner try to foul the catcher as
same as poet might use implied meaning for some words. Poet can use words
smarter than a prose.
Usually the ball is flying high or low as same as a ball changing its
course depend on the hitter. As a poem can make one high or low and
sometimes it is very difficult to understand the meaning the poet try to
convey in his poem.
The last sentence concludes the game just like the reade enjoy a prose or a
poem when they unertand as sweet as a plum.

I think this is a very good poem. I like it a lot. The only thing i don't
like is the comparison to baseball, even though i play baseball i am
ashamed that all of these girly poets comare to baseball. It is a very
manly sport and i am very dissapointed

This is a very clever poem well written by a poet named Robert Francis.
The poem "Catch" can be compared to a baseball because any poems can be
tricky and full of meanings. He wanted the reader to think hard about his
poem. The last two stanza refers to any readers "Over his head, make him
scramble to pick up the meaning, And now, like a posy, a pretty one plump
in his hands". Poems are like baseball games; throw different words and
outwit the readers' knowledge.

I recently encountered this poem in my english class and I wanted to know
more about it. Since there were not any comment here, I just wanted to
post my point of view. I believe that this poem is about the importance of
interpreting poetry. . .Hence the name "Catch". I think that the baseball
game is symbolic of the relationship between a poem and its audience, or
either the poet and the reader.
