Richard Brautigan - Kafka's Hat

With the rain falling
surgically against the roof,
I ate a dish of ice cream
that looked like Kafka's hat.
It was a dish of ice cream
tasting like an operating table
with the patient staring
up at the ceiling.

A very dark and chilling view of existence. Kafka illuminated the darkness of absurdity and despair, and judging by Brautigan's tragic fate, he could relate to Kafka's genius in the somber tone of so much of his poetry.
