Buckshot Lefonque
I came to hear about this poem when I heard Buckshot Lefonque sing about
it. Both the poem and the song did move me greatly.

I know why the caged bird sings
Its a touching poem that depicts a life of a prisoner and someone that has
freedom no one's freedom should be trampled upon.'You can reach for the
stars' the sky is the starting point .Thanks Maya.

I know Why The Caged Bird Sings
deeply and profoundly sad, yet beautiful.......the part about longing for
something you are unaware of, but longing for it anyway because some part
of you knows and has the imprint of it, really touches my heart......such
tragedies exist unfortunately.

Maya Angelou is one of the most inspirational artists of literature in our
time, and the idiot who said he didnt like her because of her comparisons
is just that, an idiot. I have not seen you come up with a poem or a book,
so for you to judge her is just apalling and disrespectful! When you have
lived a tough life like she has, and written many works, then you can
judge her. other than that, shut up! Thank you Maya Angelou for being the
great women you are!!!

This is definitely a writer who can open her life and
write about it without hesitation or turning her head away. Which may be a
rare quality that gives such power to her writing. The title to me is
significant in understanding what the author has written, she says, I know
why the caged bird sings.
This metaphor also is in the writing of the 13th century saga Nichiren who
talks about a caged bird
being like (our ignorant self) who calls out and the free birds come (our
enlightened nature) and surround the cage which act as the enviromental
stimulus for the caged bird to want to become free. Without trying to
understate the painful places our life can be in, our deep suffering can
become the cause for us to develop the kind of self that can move to
change; in a manner we never imagined.
