Langston Hughes - Po' Boy Blues

When I was home de
Sunshine seemed like gold.
When I was home de
Sunshine seemed like gold.
Since I come up North de
Whole damn world's turned cold.

I was a good boy,
Never done no wrong.
Yes, I was a good boy,
Never done no wrong,
But this world is weary
An' de road is hard an' long.

I fell in love with
A gal I thought was kind.
Fell in love with
A gal I thought was kind.
She made me lose ma money
An' almost lose ma mind.

Weary, weary,
Weary early in de morn.
Weary, weary,
Early, early in de morn.
I's so weary
I wish I'd never been born.

In Po' Boys Blues Langston Huges shows his desire to move north to enjoy the freedoms that in particular moment in America was the only place a Negro could be free. He sees the hope and oportunities he can achive in New York City. Once he is there things are not exactly as he had anticipated.

He does not understand the reasons why things are so hard when he has been a good human being and never done no wrong. The fact of being black gay male makes society reject him.

He ponders about his dream of moving to New York city as the "a gal that was kind" once he reached NYC he lost all hope and confronted by reality of what is in store in the world of a gay black male.

He worries every day about who he is and the fact that he can not change who he is or how he looks thats why he wishes of never been born.
