When was the poem "Mother to Son" written? Does it predate the short
story, "Thank You, M'am," which has a similar theme? I find a copyright
date of 1958 for the story.

This poem is so powerful! Although it is written from the perspective of a
Black woman, everyone can benefit from the wisdom shared. I shared it with
my son, 11 years old, today, and we just marveled at the depth of it.

I learned this poem at the age of eight years old from my third grade
teacher. I'm 46 years old now and this poem has been coming back to me over
and over again in my life. When heartship come upon me this words come back
to me. I truly get strength from this poem!!!

Oh my g*d i have been looking for this poem for forever and now that i've
found it, it's just as great as it was when i first read it 5 years ago.
This poem is so profound. I think a lot of people would turn up better if
they had a mother like that. You can tell that she is the kind of person
that gets wiser from more experiences and the world needs more people like
that!!!!!

This poem made a profound statement in my life.
The first time I heard these words was in a play over 20 years ago in my
elementary school in Atlanta, Ga. Through the years I found myself quoting
this phrase "Life for me anit been no crystal stair". It was by chance I
mentioned this phrase to a co-worker and place the phase on Ask Jeeves.com
and learned this was a poem by Langston Hughes. I can now share this poem
with my kids, and hope it will have an impact on them as it did me.

I agree with all that this poem is a poem of encouragement and that his
mother is telling him not to give up in life inspite the situation or who
may tell you other wise. As she also tells him look at me it wasn't easy
and I didn't give up and neither should you. I also believe that she was
not just refering to the hard times but even when things are going well
there is always something being ploted against you so stay strong even in
your good times and those bad times will be a breeze.
