K's comments clearly demonstrate the fact that he/she missed the boat
completely.
This is a great piece of inspirational writing. I use it to motivate not
only my student but also myself.

I loved this poem as a young girl and found it very inspirational. Now, as
I enter my 60's I find it even more so. I am a 5th grade teacher and I
have decided that it is time to "pass it on.."

At the age of 9, my 4th grade teacher had me read this poem before the
entire school. It felt great to be able to read such a great piece of
poetry before all my schoolmates. I have not read it since then, until
now. I also decided to read a few of the comments posted. This site gives

When I read the critical comment posted by K, it saddened me. However, we
are all entitled to our opinions. I try to follow the motto my grandmother
repeated to me through childhood "If you don't have anything nice to say,
don't say anything at all". Why not reveal your whole name (K)? Kudos to
the teacher that had you analyze "like" every single word and write an
essay on it? Anyone from a Afican American family that has stories passed
on to them from their "Southern" ancestors should be able to appreciate
these words written by one of the WORLDS greatest poets! Pick up a book on
the struggle of blacks in the south, if you can't appreciate Mr. Hughes
words, then you certainly aren't worthy of reading them.

Langston Hughes has always been one of my favorite poets. I love his
superb usage of the metaphor "The Crystal Stair. I've referenced this poem
many times while raising my son as a single Parent.

I didn't like this the first time I read it, but then we had to analyze
like every single word and write an essay on it for school and now I
absolutely HATE IT.
