I believe this poem is about the ongoing stugles of life.

The thing I like about Langston Hughes' poems, and I'm not usually a poetry
reader, is the way they can state one point of view while also allowing you
to see another from the same image.
So you have your crystal stair, which the mother's life was not. It was
not smooth and pretty. There were splinters and other hardships.
However, Hughes spend a brief time training in engineering, and did okay in
a very tough school (I want to say, Columbia, but I'm working from memory
here.) My point is, he didn't like it but he certainly grapsed the
essential points. And if you think about building, a crystal stair would
be an absolute disaster. It would look very pretty and you'd kill yourself
falling on it. So the poem states not only 'life is hard' but 'my life,
and by inference, yours, may have its ugly places and its hard places, but
in the end it will work better than many that look prettier'.

I believe that the "crystal stair" reference means that crystal is
transparent, you can see the other side clearly through crystal. If her
life was no crystal stair, she didn't know what the outcome was going to
be, she just knew that she had to keep moving and keep working for the best
life she could make for herself, and she continues to do so. I am the
mother to two young boys and believe me my children will know this poem and
be inspired hopefully as much as I was.

This poem is timeless and universal. We can all apply it to our lives. The
poet through the mother sends the message that we all will have to bear
crosses in our lives. And even though we stumble and fall and we are faced
with difficult challenges, we must fight, forge ahead, and never give up on
life--life, the gift.

K's comments clearly demonstrate the fact that he/she missed the boat
completely.
This is a great piece of inspirational writing. I use it to motivate not
only my student but also myself.

I loved this poem as a young girl and found it very inspirational. Now, as
I enter my 60's I find it even more so. I am a 5th grade teacher and I
have decided that it is time to "pass it on.."
