This poem made a profound statement in my life.
The first time I heard these words was in a play over 20 years ago in my
elementary school in Atlanta, Ga. Through the years I found myself quoting
this phrase "Life for me anit been no crystal stair". It was by chance I
mentioned this phrase to a co-worker and place the phase on Ask Jeeves.com
and learned this was a poem by Langston Hughes. I can now share this poem
with my kids, and hope it will have an impact on them as it did me.

I agree with all that this poem is a poem of encouragement and that his
mother is telling him not to give up in life inspite the situation or who
may tell you other wise. As she also tells him look at me it wasn't easy
and I didn't give up and neither should you. I also believe that she was
not just refering to the hard times but even when things are going well
there is always something being ploted against you so stay strong even in
your good times and those bad times will be a breeze.

I really like this poem because I belive that I really do say a lot about
black history and life in the old days when people gave up.

As a teacher, I always tried to have poems for them of encouragement. The
idea of not giving up in times of great trial is something I hope they took
from this poem.
