This poem is about immigration. Gertrude's father was an immigrant from
Germany, and so was her mother's parents. This poem is supposed to be read
like its being written by an actual immigrant. Most of the middle lines are
sentence fragments, like how an immigrant would speak who just came to
America, and just learned English. The last lines are talking about how all
the people in America are now one, and they have planted their own roots in
