The writer, Gerald Stern,is both the undertaker and the lover of this
utterly alive, loudly barking, dead dog. The body of the dog, and the
silence of that slain animal,speak more loudly now, in their distant and
cold departure, than words could ever speak. Stern is a warrior,hero, and
sudden friend to me, all at once.
