I read this poem in high school. I was on the forensics team and read this in the poetry division. I won many awards for my presentation of Silence...Now, at 47, I can still recite it in the same prose as I did back then. It still has meaning in my life..and will always be a favorite.

Silence
I first read this poem years ago in an English Lit. textbook. I remembered the 1st stanza, but could not for the life of me remember who wrote it. It's a beautiful poem, full of meaning and I'm glad that I found it again.

I believe it was in 1965 I won an award for recital of this lovely poem. People of nearly all ages can relate to parts of this poem at some time in their lives. Having lived the great range of life, I understand the importance of reflecting on our experiences and learning from others as well. This poem was not my guide, nothing takes the place of the Bible, and the gods do not understand one another without speach, for there is only one God. Edgar Lee Masters died in 1950, the year I was born, if the dead could speak he might revise "Silence" to say there is only one God. Thank You, Diane
