Charles Bukowski - Oh Yes

there are worse things than
being alone
but it often takes decades
to realize this
and most often
when you do
it's too late
and there's nothing worse
than
too late.

This poem reminds me of something that I once read that General Douglas McArthur said, and that was that most military battles are lost all over two words: "Too late!" There's a time that things must be done, and there comes a time when it is too late. I am a lawyer, and I live in fear of those two words: Too late! See the movie THE VERDICT, starring (I've forgotten his name: is it Paul Newman?) Yeah, that's it: Paul Newman. Well, it is a great movie, and it tells the story of a lawyer who said just that: there comes a time when it is too late to get ready for trial. I live with that movie and that thought on my mind, and it is agonizing at times. Too late! Beware!

Sincerely,
