Books Gone to Soldiers

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A "Desert Island" book
I would want this book with me on a desert island. The characters are so vivid, I was so connected with them, and I learned so much about World War II from such a personal viewpoint. Ms.Piercy's research was very detailed. I could re-read this book over and over & still learn something new. To be cliche - I cried, I laughed, I screamed..... there are few books written in the last 20 years that I would recommend as highly.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - richley woven, unforgetable and fascinating
Never has a book stayed in my memory for so long. With 6 different people, each in a different part of the world, the reader is given a view of what war was like from the human aspect, how where u lived at the time and who you were, could affect your life in so many different ways. Each character, is interwoven with one another, tho thousands of miles and vastly different wartime experiences seperate them. This is the book that history teachers should have us read, so we can understand, and feel, and cry. It is not just the horrors, but the everyday life of people trying to deal with the changes war brings to all.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Strong women in a story that stays with you
I just reread Gone to Soldiers with my book club and now remember why it makes such a lasting impression. The large cast of characters and their intricately interwoven lives are set against a ghastly setting that haunts you long after you finish the book. Not being a history buff, I have no idea how accurate it is, but I am certain I have a better understanding of what the war did to the lives of people from my partents' generation. It's about war before the days of body counts and photocommentary on the evening news--the kind that tests the strength of a country and the people in it. It touches and teaches--a pretty good test of art.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Good read, Bad history
Here we go again. Well written, so so research, modern PC sensibilities. Cable TV quality in print. Assumes much with little to back it up. Perfect for the history lite, present politically correct crowd. Enough said.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Filled with errors
A historical novel should at least have some connection with accuracy. This has so many things wrong I gave up counting. If you want to learn about World War II, read real history by a real historian, or at least by a good novelist like Herman Wouk who was actually there.
