This particular unit, the entry-level iBook G4 12-inch M9164LL/A, is the most affordable mobile computer in the entire Apple roster.
Featuring a spry power section consisting of an 800 MHz PowerPC G4 processor and 256 MB RAM (expandable to 640 MB), the system packs enough raw muscle for most typical mobile computing tasks. However, the real surprise comes in its 3-D rendering capabilities. Unlike many comparably equipped notebooks, the iBook G4 12-inch features an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 video chipset with 32 MB of dedicated DDR SDRAM memory. Thusly, it will efficiently handle demanding applications such as 3-D drawing and even some 3-D gaming.
At just 11.2 by 9.1 by 1.3 inches and a scant 4.9 pounds, the iBook G4 12-inch is downright tiny. Yet when you flip the lid you’ll find such desirable perks as a full-size 77-key keyboard with 12 function keys and four arrow keys, a trackpad with double-tap and drag capabilities, a smallish but crystal clear 12.1-inch display capable of 1024x768 resolution, and a combination CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive through which you can burn audio CDs, archive files and play the latest Hollywood blockbusters. For storing your files, Apple has installed a serviceable 30 GB hard disk -- enough space for general use but too little for serious multimedia archiving.
Connectivity options include an integrated 56K modem for dial-up communications, a 10/100BASE-T Ethernet port for LAN and high-speed Internet and email, and two high-speed USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire 400 port for external high-tech toys such as scanners, digital cameras and digital camcorders. Great computer. Has the slot loading cd drive. Burn your own cd watch your favorite dvds. Transfer files from Microsoft Office to your other pcs. Search the internet without the fear of a virus. Check your email. Great starter Mac. Best part is it has a very stable operating system, which means it won't crash as often (if ever) as some other pcs might.

It is a millon times better than a Dell or any other windows computer. I should know i have a powerhouse windows xp pro machine. I use it for internet with the airport card awesome and easy to install. It was worth the 80 buckaroos. I also love the simplicity with my beloved 15 gb g3 iPod. The next computer may as well be a Mac it runs smoother faster and It is alot simpler. And 30 gb is plenty space also even with how much i use it 256 ram is beutiful on the macs. Look I love Macs but an 800MHz G4? It's just too slow to run modern software. The basic design of this CPU is almost 10 years old!! Most upper-end new software isn't rated to run on it.
Keep looking and accept nothing less than a fast G5.

I had this notebook for a few months, having switched from the PC to the Mac platform. OSX is a contender... it has grown quite a bit over the past few years to be a true alternative to Windows. If you are the type who only needs a few core applications (as 90% of computer users are), you might seriously consider the Mac platform.
However, Apple needs to get their hardware out of the stone-age. The iBook is a toy, and a 800mhz processor *is indeed* slow. Mac Zealots will tell you otherwise, ... Read More

I've got friends with this (I personally have a 15" PowerBook) machine, and it's great. With OS X I recommend at least 512mb of ram, but for the casual user, 256 would work.
And a side note...multiple users posted reviews about how old and outdated an 800mhz processor is; one thing these people don't know is that it's not x86. Anything non-x86 (POWER, PowerPC, SPARC, MIPS, Alpha, etc) is much better than anything x86. One number I've heard is that in the days of 100mhz, anything non-x86 was 2 ... Read More
