SuSE 7.2 Professional is suitable for desktop or server use. It's also ideal for completists, with more than 2,000 current programs--and you can download updates from SuSE's Web site--supplied on seven CDs and one DVD, with five manuals: Installation, Configuration, Applications, Reference, and Network, plus 90 days of telephone support.
The graphical installation routine autodetects and configures most PC hardware, including supported TV cards, CD writers, USB devices, and more. It comes with the ReiserFS journaling file system (power cuts don't affect your data) and the Crypto file system, which encrypts data on portable PCs.
The network support in SuSE 7.2 Professional is the best yet. It isn't just the quality of the programs, which are better than ever, but the ease of installation and configuration--right down to LDAP, firewalls, and Web proxy servers (Squid). Samba 2.2 now supports Windows 2000 clients and you can even install programs over the network.
Naturally, you get kernel 2.4.4, XFree86 4.0.3 with anti-aliasing for fonts and TrueType support, CUPS as well as lpd for printing, and extensive multimedia support, including video and sound capture and editing, and writing to CD. KDE 2.1.2 is the default desktop, with Gnome 1.4 an optional install.
For the unsophisticated user, SuSE Linux 7.2 Professional can provide a productive desktop straight out of the box using KOffice or StarOffice, while even a small network requires little skill to configure. For the sophisticated user, SuSE 7.2 does all the basic configuration for you, leaving just the interesting parts to sort out.
