Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Set against a backdrop of the Baltimore Orioles' historic trip to play baseball in Cuba in the spring of 1999, this lively documentary provides an eye-opening look at baseball's grand tradition in that country. The history of Cuban baseball stretches back to the mid-1800s, and as some Cubans interviewed in a barbershop proudly boast, a form of baseball was being played in Cuba before Europeans even reached the New World. For many years, Cuban and American baseball proceeded on parallel tracks, with a number of Cuban players coming north to play in both the Major Leagues and the Negro Leagues. After Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball, the number of Cuban players on American diamonds grew sharply, and a clever montage showing 1950s-vintage baseball cards demonstrates the highly visible presence Cuban ballplayers had in the majors. During the same period, American players honed their skills playing winter ball in the Cuban league, and former Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda appears to reminisce about his days playing before enormous and enthusiastic Cuban crowds. Finally, interviews with Cuban ballplayers who have defected and found fame in America provide insight into the sharp differences that still keep two nations that love baseball separated. --Robert J. McNamara

One CANNOT avoid the political implications of a major league baseball team playing the cuban natl. team. That is where the documentary lags. Where it really takes off is the interview with the fan ... Read More
