Editorial Review:

Description:
Get set for the adventure of a lifetime in the #1 comedy hit of the year, HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS! Rick Moranis stars as a preoccupied inventor who just can't seem to get his electro-magnetic shrinking machine to work. Then, when he accidentally shrinks his kids down to one-quarter-inch tall and tosses them out in the trash, the real adventure begins! Now the kids face incredible dangers as they try to make their way home through the jungle of their own backyard! Hurricane sprinklers! Dive-bombing bees! A runaway lawn mower and much, much more! Directed by Academy Award(R)-winner Joe Johnston (Visual Effects, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, 1981), this record-breaking smash is full of amazing special effects, hilarious comedy, wild chases, and nonstop surprises!

Amazon.com:
A deft balance between special effects, comedy, and family dynamics made this 1989 film a hit for Disney and spawned both a string of video sequels and a subsequent TV series. Moranis is endearing as the bumbling inventor/father of the Szalinski family. He inadvertently shrinks his own children then throws them out with the trash. They, along with the neighbor kids, must journey back across their own backyard, now an enormous, dangerous distance, to get back to the right height. Much is done with the perils of the lawn, from a wild deluge from the sprinklers to a nasty encounter with the lawnmower and numerous encounters with gigantic insects. A generally kid-friendly, inventive (no pun intended), and entertaining outing. --Keith Simanton

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A great classic!
I remember watching this movie when I was a kid, and loving every second of it! And, what do you know? I still do to this day!

Very creative story, great characters, all around good clean fun for everyone!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good effects sans CGI
I watched this a lot of times but never watched the 2 sequels (Honey I Blew Up the Kid, Honey We Shrunk Ourselves) after this. Still this original entertains me everytime I view it. Special effects weren't bad in this 1989 film considering that CGI weren't used. Some scaling though needs improvement. Matt Frewer as the obnoxious neighbour delivered the funny parts well. You wouldn't go wrong with this Disney movie.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - No widescreen version!
Too sad.
I have widescreen TV and this dvd is annoying.

It has only full screen format.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Magical
When I hear grown adults dog on this film, you gotta wonder about them. It is a kids film, yes, and clearly meant to be so. However, this goes far beyond the pale of normality within that genre. This was a first of its kind and well thought-out.

The kids all did such a fine job with their respective roles, better than the adults, really. All in all, I remember this film tapping my imagination the way no other film did of that era. Of course, I was nine years old, and it did what it was ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - great movie with funny and scary scenes
i think this is a very cool movie. it has very scary scenes (like the scene with Antie and the scorpion-- almost made me cry...), and very funny scenes (like the one where the dog starts making rick spin on the rope-- that made me fall to the floor, it was so funny!!!)

all in all, i thought this was a very good movie. i give it a one million star rating!
