Looking for a way to make the American Revolution come alive for your child? Based on Esther Forbes's book of the same name, Johnny Tremain takes place in Boston from July 1773 through April 1775, and tells the story of a young apprentice silversmith drawn into a fight for human rights. When an accident cripples Johnny Tremain's hand and ends his hopes of becoming a great silversmith, Tremain finds himself without work and accused of a crime he did not commit. Sons of Liberty members Paul Revere and Josiah Quincy are outraged by the circumstantial case against Tremain, agree to represent him free of charge, and win his acquittal in court. Through association with his new friends, Tremain begins to better understand the current political climate, and eventually joins them in the battle for freedom. Tremain's involvement in the emptying of British tea into Boston Harbor, the arrival of the Redcoats in Boston, and the beginnings of the American Revolution at Concord is powerful and moving. The costuming is splendid, the music patriotic, and the dialogue well crafted. The film stars Hal Stalmaster as Johnny Tremain, costars Luana Patten and Jeff York, and runs 80 minutes. Johnny Tremain, originally came out when I was 10 years old and I hadn't seen it since then! It was fun to go back and see it at age 61! They don't make many pictures like this, great family entertainment! But you always expect that from Walt Disney!
Rating: - A not to miss Disney classic
I have loved this movie since I was a kid. I used to watch it on Disney channel every 4th of July. They always played it for America's birthday. I am sad my kids cannot watch it on Disney channel anymore, but they can watch it whenever they want now. Great story line.
Rating:  - Johnny Tremain revisited
I saw this movie when it first came out. I was fourteen years old and I thought Hal Stalmaster was really cool. I got to thinking about the movie again recently after watching the series "John Adams" on television, so I ordered it. Now, fifty years later, I see it as sort of a kids' movie that doesn't have a lot of depth. I'm glad I saw it again, but I can understand why Hal Stalmaster decided to give up acting. Rating: - Fun historical movie.
I like old "hokey" Disney movies. This one fits that dynamic in some senses of the word, but it also provides a historical aspect that is very refreshing. I think a lot of times movies feel obligated to include as much obscenity and violence as possible in the name of authenticity. This movie has nothing of that.

Rating: - Remember it's a Disney movie
I found it interesting reading many of the negative reviews of this movie. What people seem to forget is that this is a 1950's Disney movie. It's not Braveheart. Yes, I agree, it's not as good as the book, but many movies pale next to the books they're taken from. There are 2 good things that should be recognized in these reviews. 1) In the 50's Disney chose to make movies about American History.
