This documentary was one of the first of its type for television. What did it do differently? It showed its subject in his element. In this case, there were two elements: the Gould family's cottage on Lake Simcoe and the recording studio.
The viewer gets to see the young Glenn Gould recording the Italian Concerto, playing piano in his bathrobe, discussing musicians, and walking with his dog. He even gives an interview!

This video shows Gould in the late 1950s. The first half was filmed at Gould's retreat on Lake Simcoe 90 miles north of Toronto. It shows him playing his Chickering piano(the Bach C Minor Partita and other works)It also has an interview segment. The second half was filmed in the studio in New York, and shows Gould taping Bach's Italian Concerto.
