Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: So, they let both Rex Harrison and Anthony Newley sing. This 1968 family musical is classier than the 1998 Eddie Murphy remake, with all of its scatological humor. This won a couple of Oscars (Best Song, Best Effects) and was nominated for seven more, including Best Picture. At the time of release, however, this was a box-office dud. Based (in part) on the magical Hugh Lofting book, it begins in Puddleby-by-the-Marsh, England, from which the world-renowned veterinarian Dolittle (Harrison) begins his quest for a giant pink sea snail. Children should find this enjoyable for its exotic creatures, such as the Pushme-Pullyou. Most adults may not agree as readily, although some of us consider this a guilty pleasure. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Rating: - I love this film
I really do. It's simple, easy to watch, and younger kids seem to love it. It's just an entertaining film without over-the-top, in your face effects. Best for kids or adults in a mellow mood I would think. It works for me.
Rating: - A great family film for lovers of whimsy
I am convinced that whether or not you love this movie depends on how much you appreciate whimsical humor. There is no film more whimsical than Doctor Doolittle; but if you don't appreciate whimsical (odd, quaint, fanciful, eccentric) humor, you will find this movie simply silly and a bore. I for one love the spirit of whimsy that pervades this film, as well as the beautiful, memorable Leslie Briscusse score, and the lovely cinematography (As a child, I fell in love with the English countryside ... Rating: - A childhood favorite that stands the test of time
Too often when you go back and watch a film you adored as a child, you realize it really wasn't all that good, and even worse, you can barely bring yourself to watch it. Not so this one! Critics have loved to bash this film for decades, but I don't understand why. A great score with songs I can still sing, a great cast, a humane hero who becomes more human when he allows himself to love and be loved in return...and Geoffrey Holder! This film (like many of the Disney classics) helped cultivate my ... Read More
Rating: - Doctor Do Little
"Doctor Dolittle" was, amazingly,a nominee for Best Picture in 1967. Rex Harrison was a talented actor in his own right,spot-on as the professor in "My Fair Lady" opposite a luminous Audrey Hepburn, and equally great as Julius Caesar in the campfest "Cleopatra" with Liz Taylor. "Doctor Dolittle" shows the good professor out of place with the animals.
"Doctor Dolittle" is an interminable musical. Harrison is cast as the good doctor who can "talk to the animals" (he really does talk,in his talk ... Read More

The old Doctor Doolittle, the one I watched as child. Bought it for my 3 and 4 y/o, but they wouldn't sit through it. I still enjoy it.
