Rating: - if Odets could write comedy
William Peterson's showcase performance as a sympathetic prototype of Dan Quayle proves that, long before CSI, he was capable of complex subtlety and timing. This ensemble piece does well with the "eccentric family" genre, and can be thanked in passing for featuring a human but non-degenerate priest--a rarity in movies for decades now.

Like the movie "Parenthood" which is directed by Ron Howard, this movie is also painfully true to life. Johnny is a lost hero. An everyday hero making some wrong choices but in the end making THEE right choice which is why "you always end up in the right place, but you make getting there so interesting". And that's what this move is. An interesting, funny trip through one families insanity.

This movie had me laughing out loud! A truly crazy family made up of siblings Bob Hoskins (the oldest, experiencing a midlife crisis), Frances McDormand (the rebel nun), William Petersen (pretty boy attempting to fill his father's shoes) and Pamela Reed (divorced but not telling the family) reunite for the funeral of their father. An excellent script, graced by first rate performers. This movie is much more than a comedy: it's almost a mirror. It makes you reflect on the pathetic black comedy family life -and human condition- usually is. I only wish it was already available on DVD...
