Rating: - Imafool for April Fools
I LOVE this film. Everyting about it is pure delight and magic. It is the perfect bookend for/to Breakfast at Tiffany's. Brillant casting, wonderful direction, visually outstanding and just beautiful to watch. Just watch The opening party scene and you to will be hooked. Tiffany's opening shot does/did the same thing. I have an old VHS copy that is plain worn. When will this film be released on DVD???? The wait is killing me. Please release this GEM, please...
Rating: - A Fantasy Fufilled
I first saw this movie as a late night rerun just a few years ago. I was immediately captivated by Catherine Deneuve in the same manner as the character played by Jack Lemmon. I began to feel as if I were living that fantasy through Lemmon--every sad or happy emotion, especially love. I cared about what happened in the movie as if it were my own life experience. The fact that the story and lines might be cliche or saccharin mattered not to me. I was completely swept up in the relationship between ... Read More
Rating: - ...unless it affects me
Read an interview of Wallace Shawn (the humunkulus from Woody Allen's Manhattan) recently where he said "it doesn't interest me unless it affects me". That simple statement struck me as the perfect way to estimate the significance of a performance or event or film, as in this case. The April Fools affected me. Now, I'm a guy and emotions and "feelings" (uck!) sometimes ... Read More
Rating: - One of the all time great romantic comedies
As romantic comedies go,"The April Fools" is one of the undiscovered treasures of the 1960s, comparable to the vanguard of all New York romantic comedies "Breakfast At Tiffany's". This film is far more simplistic (too simplistic it seems for many reviewers in 1969) and perhaps because of this it will strike more of a chord with today's audiences weary of recent ponderous comedies.
Perhaps what sets this movie apart from the others is that it captures-totally-the fashionable corporate high life ... Read More
Rating: - My All Time Favorite Movie
I was working in a movie theater when "The April Fools" first came out. Once the customers were seated, I had a choice of watching either this movie or the then mega hit The Graduate. I saw The Graduate just once. I watched The April Fools over 50 times. I've watched it every time it showed on TV over the past 35 years. I own it, and I'll buy the DVD when I find it. And I'll continue to watch it.
This is a must see movie which never made it big because it came out with the Graduate which, ... Read More
