Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Hooppaw has written an anecdotal history of an Air Force pilot in the Strategic Air Command. As the author performs the preflight, inflight and postflight activities of his last mission in the BUF (B-52), memories of his career as a pilot unfold into a collection of experiences and vignettes, often with a humorous bent, of the lives of crewmembers in peace and war. He presents the human side of flying a serious mission from the boredom of nuclear alert to tedious missions in Southeast Asia.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A spledid job!
This is one of the most impressive personal accounts of Cold War-era life in the Air Force. The number of separate recollections is staggering. I sometimes expected to turn the page and find the author "running out of gas" as his material gets thinner. Not so! Great recollections are to be found from the first page to the last.

I agree that the writing is a bit dry, but that is a benefit, and not a detriment to the book. The dryness adds credibility and efficiency to the writing by eliminating ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - COL Hooppaw's military autobiography
1. Liked COL Hooppaw's book enough that I gave my copy to my brother (another AF COL) and am ordering another copy. His web site asked for the courtesy of a review; I owe him that much, although he has hardly been slighted on reviews.
2. Collect personal narratives of US combat pilots. The WWII crop is just about done, so am paying attention to the cold war narratives.
3. COL Hooppaw's is in the top ten, so far.
4. One of your reviewers commented on the dry quality of some of the details ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Good Overview of Life as a B-52 Pilot in SAC
I flew BUFFs (I prefer the longer acronym) from 1970 - 1974 towards the end of the author's story, but his descriptions were right on. Helped me recall some memories that had faded. For the former crewmember or sustainer, or for someone trying to understand what flying B-52 missions was like in the '70s in both the States and Arc Light this book is a must. Does a nice job of showing the lighter side of crew life while keeping the story suitable for a general audience. Charlie and Ned you guys are still ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great details, great backgound on ARC LIGHT
I'm a writer in L.A. and needed to do research on the ARC LIGHT bombing campaign. Jim Hooppaw's book has a lot of great background on the operation. What struck me about this memoir was the reality Hooppaw infused in his prose about the day-to-day life of pilot in SAC. While the actual writing was somewhat dry at points, if you use your imagination, there's a lot of exciting--and funny!--stuff in here. Recommended for anyone interested in military aviation, military careers, Vietnam and the Air Force's role ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - True BUF Memories
It's difficult to add to the previously written reviews of this book, since those reviewers already said it all. I can only concur with their opinions and thoughts, and add that the book brings back a flood of memories. Since my particular experience was mainly with the BUF, I immensely enjoyed reading this book. From the boredom of alert duty to the tedious flights from Anderson to SEA during Arc Light, all may not have been glamour or glory. However, excitement and drama certainly did occur during those war ... Read More
