Editorial Review:

Product Description:
PUBLISHED IN GERMAN. Of the approximately 700 pages in this volume nearly 300 pages present Medieval literature in its original language along with a facing English translation. Thus, more advanced readers can follow the original language, while beginners can read a number of masterpieces from the Middle Ages in English. Der arme Heinrich is presented in its entirety, and significant portions of other epics, such as Das Nibelungenlied, Parzival, Iwein, and Tristan, reveal the flavor of the Medieval works. The samples from the 'Late Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation' illustrate the wide variety of the period--from Luther, the Mystics, Volkslieder, Meistersanger, to Das Narrenschiff and Faust. The 'Baroque' includes nearly fifty poems from writers such as Opitz, Gryphius, Dach, Gerhardt, Fleming, Hofmannswaldau, Greiffenberg, and Gunther. The entirety of Lessing's Emilia Galotti makes up the bulk of 'Englightenment and Rococo,' while the complete text of J.M.R. Lenz's Die Soldaten is the centerpiece of 'Storm and Stress.' In addition, other major writers from these last two periods are not forgotten, but included as well.
