Lally's poems should be read quickly, because they were written quickly. They show mind in the act of making the mind, as good poems do. He uses poetry to create himself, so content is biographical, hovering on the shameful, as befits one who is Irish. These poems get close to what lies behind shame that refuses to be guilt.
