Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Fun read yet forgettable
Looking for a new horror book to read, I picked this one up since the title, though one word, was about a subject not seen much in modern horror novels. Ghouls and graveyards have been somewhat overlooked recently and taking up a ghoul as the antagonist caught my attention.

The book is supposed to be a coming-of-age story from the early 80's, and the author doesn't let you forget this with all his references to that time. It is about three young boys not quite teenagers and their exploits ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A Fine Read
This is the 5th Brian Keene book I have read. This book has a different type storyline from the previous books I have read which are The Rising books and The Conqueror Worms. I think the writing here is excellent as in his previous books but the content was more disturbing to me. While the other books dealt with zombies ripping people apart and eating them and the other wildlife run amuck eating people . . . this dealt with more than just a supernatural monster. Even without the Ghoul to deal with, these ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Another Winner
Brian Keene is quickly becoming my favorite horror writer. Though again dealing with the undead of sorts, this is more of a coming of age story with a monster(the ghoul) in there for some blood and chills. The story is set in the 1980's as you will be well aware of by the first chapter. Keene really throws out a lot of 80's references in the beginning. This is the story of 3 boys growing up much like any 3 friends. But this is Keene, and 2 of the boys have abusive parents. Then add in the Ghoul and you ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A fun monster story
This was a nice retro coming of age horror story. Though the 80's references were way too heavy handed during the first section of the novel (nearly one, sometimes two every line!) the author lightened up on the music and tv references and got on with the story. It's about a young boy and his two best friends and the summer when they must deal with everyday monsters as well as a slimy, corpse-eating ghoul. It's a fun monster book with a realistic ending if you're in the mood.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Lots of fun
So when you read a good terror book you can say a)I liked the imagination of the author, b)I liked the characters, c)I liked the description of the grotesque scenes... z)I enjoyed the book immensely. I'll put this book in that category, just get your popcorn and your soda and read the book.
