Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - One of the worst zombie books that I have ever read
I think my summary as to why I disliked this book so much has to do with the possessed talking goldfish. Without that and some clean up on the often very dry and hopeless plod of Keene's writing style it might have been better. In fact the father and son sections were rather emotional: surely the high points of the story.

I will not be reading any more of Mr. Keene's work even out of curiosity however. I'll stick to fanfiction and other writers for my fix of zombie goodness. Give the ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The Rising by Brian Keene
The Rising is the debut novel by Brian Keene published in 2003.

When Jim Thurmond's wife leaves him for another man, he sets about to rescue his son.

Unfortunately, due to an accident, people are being turned into Zombies and roam the US looking for victims.

Jim then meets several people who help him survive the evil Zombies: a scientist who is responsible for everything; a priest; a prostitute; and some Army men.

But the scientist knows the secret ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Macabre Gem of Zombified, Gore-Filled Madness.
This book deserves all praise granted to it. Brian Keene writes like a true madman. He writes clean, structured sentences and manages to make a 321 page book seem like an epic six-hundred-pager.

He accomplishes this by being able to introduce a lot of characters throughout the novel, and making the ones that don't stick around seem as real as the main characters that do.

All of his descriptions make whichever ominous scene you're reading feel like they're happening ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Are any Leisure Books good???
Picking this book up I thought it would be good because of some good reviews, but now I wonder if a bulk of the people that raved about it weren't retarded.
The zombies were so cheesy. They could drive trucks, airplanes, use guns, talk... and the things they said were so laughably dumb it was almost painful. After eating a black man, one of them says, "I love dark meat".
Then later the survivors are battling the undead in a used car lot and one of them asks right before trying to eat them, ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Best Zombie Novel Ever!
The Rising had a blurb on its cover by Richard Laymon - so I bought it, and I am soooooo glad that I did - as it is, hands down, the best zombie novel that I've ever read!!
I do not want to give anything away, but Keene's twist on the zombie genre is awesome!! I loved the concept, right away!!
The only bad thing about this book, is the way that it ended - I could not believe how it ended!! Let's just say that the day I finished it, I had to immediately go out and buy the sequel, so make sure ... Read More
