Shortly after the turn of the century Wallace published two articles in "Fortnightly Review" concerning what he thought was the discovery of a previously-unknown Poe poem titled "Leonainie." He was soon told that the poem was a prank played by the Indiana writer James Whitcomb Riley, but at first refused to believe that intelligence.
