Editorial Review:

Product Description:
From an acclaimed writer, here is the first-ever biography of the hugely important and influential filmmaker, Alan J. Pakula. Pakula produced his first feature film, Fear Strikes Out, with his partner, director Robert Mulligan. Together, Pakula and Mulligan went on to create one of the greatest films in the history of cinema: the 1962 film adaptation of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. By the late 1960s Pakula turned from producing to directing and quickly soared to the fore as one of the most sought-after directors of his time, beginning with The Sterile Cuckoo (1969,). Next came Klute (1971), a sexy, psychological thriller that enjoyed both critical and commercial success, and All the President's Men (1976), another film universally regarded as one of the greatest accomplishments in cinema. In the '80s and '90s, Pakula still showed a sure hand with dramas and legal thrillers, including Sophie's Choice (1982), Presumed Innocent (1990) and The Pelican Brief (1993). Based on interviews with more than 40 colleagues (including Jane Fonda, Harrison Ford, Robert Redfort, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Laruen Bacall, Candice Bergen, and Donald Sutherland), and unrestricted access to his family and archives:.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful
Brown has done Pakula proud. This is an important book for anyone interested in one of America's greatest filmmakers.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brown's "Pakula"
As with all of Jared Brown's biographies, "Alan J. Pakula His Films and His Life" is beautifully written and researched. It's a fascinating book about a fascinating man, rich in details and characters, easy to read. Pakula's life is chronicled, and his movies examined. This alone makes the book memorable, but to have even more fun I suggest you watch the movies as you read about them. Brown goes into the movies' production, the stars and their association with Pakula. Some of the details are ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Alan J. Pakula
"Alan J. Pakula" by Jared Brown is among the best film bios I have ever read, for the way it is written and for inviting me into the world of Pakula on a whole new level.

It's not enough to say the book was thoroughly researched, though it was. Clearly, Brown had access that allowed him to explore Paluka's life at a particularly meaningful level. But it is also a highly engaging journey. A really fun read. I realized, as I read it, how iconographic are many scenes from Pakula's best ... Read More
