Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Ending could have been better
I liked this collection of stories woven into a novel quite alot - the overall tone is terrific - elements of good and evil with a slight mystical bent. The other positive reviews here do a good job of describing the aspects of this book I enjoyed - but what I don't see is any comments about disappointment in the ending. It all wrapped up just a little to neatly - given the subtle relationships between the stories and the mystical and quirky nature of the characters and plot. It would have been ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Awful
I managed to read this book front to back, and I did manage to come out alive, but... I wouldn't want to go back. Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Highly Recommended!
I came across David Schickler's short story "The Smoker" in an anthology, and loved it so much I had to read everything else he wrote. That story is part of this book, and I found the rest of the lot just as twisty, surprising, funny, and touching as the first I read. I recommend this to anyone who likes quirky, clever prose.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Unconvincing Mess
I regret to admit that I bought this book after a creative writing teacher cited the short story "Smokers" in a classroom discussion. I looked it up online and found that the story had caused a sensation when it ran in the New Yorker Debut Fiction issue and the author, David Schickler, was widely heralded as a great new voice in the literary world. I ordered the book immediately.

What a mistake. If that teacher hadn't otherwise been one of the best teachers I've ever had, I would send her ... Read More
