Product Description:
At nineteen, Aya is a promising Black college student from Brooklyn who is struggling through a difficult relationship with her emotionally distant mother, Miriam. One winter night, Aya is shot by a white police officer in a case of mistaken identity. Keeping vigil by her daughter's hospital bed, Miriam remembers her own youth: her battle for independence from her parents, her affair with Aya's father, and the challenges of raising her daughter. But as Miriam confronts her past -- her losses and regrets -- she begins to heal and discovers a tentative hopefulness.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Very Good
I really enjoyed this book, I haven't read the Prisoner's Wife, which some have told me is a lot better than this book, that means I am in for a treat. It was very moving, emotional book. Gave me insight into my own relationship with my mother...and with my children. Highly recommended.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Daughter : A Novel
asha wrote a moving novel, one that move me to tears,it moved me to say and to mean I love you before it cannot be heard by those who need to hear. It is an amazing novel, one I could not put down until I had finished. asha is talented, she is very artful in her expression. This book is a must read.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Very depressing
The group discussed the book and overall felt the book was a bit depressing and lacked some closure within the major characters. As a group we agreed that the main piece that was missing within the home of Miriam's parents and her own home with her daughter, Aya, was communication. When raising children, an open line of communication is needed. It was very apparent that Miriam's parents used religion to hide behind. But at the end, they ultimately disowned their daughter when she went against ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The Dreams of Children
This is a book that I truly enjoyed, and felt compelled to stick with for its entirety. It is enjoyable to read a book by an author that is not steeped in the he said/she said life of gossip ridden, syrupy love lost life spaces. It is a simple story about a woman that made choices, some good, some not so good. How she was able to cope with these choices, how she placed importance on her child being able to suceed until the child was mistaken for another hoodlum, yes is happens far too frequently in ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Moving and Standing Still
This is one of the best books I have ever read. Bandele gives us the most wonderful prose about mothers and daughters. Her words, her compelling tale of a daughter's sadness and a mother's distance manage to transcend generations, making the story not only about Aya and Miriam, but about Miriam and her mother as well. The book moves the spirit with truth, and makes the mind pause to absorb the societal ramifications of young black lives gone too soon from white police bullets. You will be moved while ...
