Rating: - The quintessential collection of this late artist.
Saul Steinberg died on 12 May and, in preparing an appreciation for publication, I revisited some of his books, most of which are out of print, alas. This book, The Discovery of America, brings together works that have appeared over the many years that this wonderful artist appeared in The New Yorker. It's quintessential Steinberg in black and white and color, full of his businessmen, dowagers, hookers, landscapes and scary urban scenes. Steinberg was, by his own admission, a writer who drew. ... Rating: - Saul Steinberg is still great, but not at his best
Saul Steinberg is the greatest cartoonist of the 20th century. His great books e.g. "The Passport" are out of print and impossible to find. This book would be terrific had it been drawn by anybody else. But the trouble is it was drawn by Steinberg. I found his usual grace of line, modernist sensibility, drafting genius and erudite wit all there, but not in as great quantity as his earlier works. But if we can see this, it because we're seeing it with eyes he opened.
