Sample a dark universe peopled with gods best forgotten and strange races best left undiscovered. Shudder in the dank breath of an ages- old evil blowing icily from the dusk-shrouded eons of a time before history. Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - greatest collection ever!
this can almost be considered as "best of hpl". it does in fact contain better storie than most collections that are supposed to be the best horror stories by hpl. the collection contains so many great stories, i won't even mention them . it's impossible. hpl had a way of taking the best from the best, and use it. gothic style when it comes to describing houses, like poe he strove against really different ideas, etc. sometimes he describes in a truly great manner, sometimes he avoids describing ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - macabre greatness
a lovely collection. contains great storiee like "the whisperer in the darkness" and "herbert west-reanimator". hpl's stories are suspenceful. he knew when to describe and when to hint. the creature is undescribeable, yet "with tentacles looking like..." etc. when hpl has a godd idea, he never fails. he delivers. only when the idea is bad, he can fail. luckily, he had lot of great ideas. unnameable gods, undescribeable monsters, mystical rites, the lure of darkness, horrible wisdom. you'll find it ... Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - That hand...the window
This is the best way into Lovecraft of all the titles on sale here. It's an anthology which includes almost all of the 'greatest hits' and some of the best of the lesser known material from his Cthulhu period. By comparison, volumes 1 and 2 in this series are B-side albums scraping around for fillers. If you're not familiar with Lovecraft at all, it's superlative, intelligent early twentieth century suspense horror with a delicious turn of phrase which still makes me happy. I recommend it very highly ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Required reading for the horror fan
Everybody calls Lovecraft a legend, a master of the horror tale, and it isn't hype. His works have influenced so many writers of today - from Stephen King, Poppy Z. Brite, Caitlin Kiernan,Mark Danielewski, and Neil Gaiman, to name a very few. This book contains the short story "Re-animator" was based on, as well. This is a great collection - pick it up and be prepared to be completely impressed.
