I use this novel to try & save my TV/Playstation-addicted friends & get them to start exercising their imaginations a bit & it's worked on several occasions. Something about it speaks to the adolescent misfit in all of us. I dunno what it is but every time a whacked-out would-be assassin gets nailed & starts quoting this book, one realizes it's gonna be around for a long time. I just reread this book after 30 years, and I found it even better than I remember. It's such a great window into the teenage mind, a boy on the cusp of childhood and adulthood, a study of contradictions: both silly and serious, irrational and clear-eyed, exaggerated and stone-cold sober, muddled and laser-sharp, intolerant and deeply sensitive, unpredictable and responsible, unbearable and immensely likable.
