Product Description:
Ex-cop turned #1 New York Times bestselling writer Joseph Wambaugh forged a new kind of literature with his great early police procedurals. Here in his classic debut novel, Wambaugh presents a stunning, raw, and unforgettable depiction of life behind the thin blue line.
In a class of new police recruits, Augustus Plebesly is fast and scared. Roy Fehler is full of ideals. And Serge Duran is an ex-marine running away from his Chicano childhood. In a few weeks they'll put on the blue uniform of the LAPD. In months they'll know how to interpret the mad babble of the car radio, smell danger, trap a drug dealer, hide a secret, and-most of all-live with the understanding that cops are different from everyone else. But for these men, these new centurions, time is an enemy. The year is 1960. The streets are burning with rage. And before they can grow old on this job, they'll have to fight for their lives...

Rating: - New Centurions and the Blue Knight
Bought these books to re-read as I bought them new. Same chilling insight and wicked humor that Wambaugh is noted for-they were almost as much fun as on the first reading.
Rating: - Good look into a misunderstood world, if not a little outdated
I read this book when I was preparing for the academy myself. It was a wonderful eye-opener that I think should be required reading for anyone wanting to pin on the badge. Some of the lessons are a little dated since Wambaugh wrote this about the civil rights era, but can still be applied in the modern world. Just to warn people out there: this is not the happy, adventure book that some may be looking for. This is about as real as it comes!
Rating: - Almost Reality
This is by far the most realistic novel about police work I have read to date. And as I have some familiarity with that work field I feel as though I can say that with some authority. Wambaugh does an amazing job of fleshing out the ideas and motives that confront every cop. I am stunned with the efficiency and accuracy Wambaugh tells of the inner workings of the police. His former work as an officer shines through, he thinks like a cop and it shows. No other former cop writes this well. I have read ... Read More

Still waiting for delivery of this item--it's been 2 weeks and no word as to where it is...Not pleased
Rating: - On the Streets of L.A.
Joseph Wambaugh joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1960. This first novel is about a policeman's life, neither exaggerated or white-washed. The chapters tell about the experiences of three recruits as a collection of stories. This book is a product of the changes of the 1960s. I don't believe it could have been published ten years earlier. Chapter 1 explains the choke-hold: it can disable or kill. A man who resists and doesn't fight back is a problem for even two bigger policemen. Whoever endures ... Read More
