Editorial Review:

Product Description:
'Exhilarating, like a swift ride through river rapids with a spunky, sexy gal handling the oars.'—Washington Post Book World

In Pam Houston's critically acclaimed collection of strong, shrewd, and very funny stories, we meet smart women who are looking for the love of a good man, and men who are wild and hard to pin down.

'I've always had this thing for cowboys, maybe because I was born in New Jersey. But a real cowboy is hard to find these days, even in the West,' says the narrator in the title story of Pam Houston's critically acclaimed collection. In these strong, shrewd, and very funny stories, we meet smart women who are looking for the love of a good man, and men who are wild and hard to pin down. Our heroines are part daredevil, part philosopher, all acute observers of the nuances of modern romance. They go where their cowboys go, they meet cowboys who don't look the part — and they have staunch friends who give them advice when the going gets rough. Cowboys Are My Weakness is a refreshing and realistic look at men and women—together and apart.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Houston put on boots and took names
This review is for the W. W. Norton & Company paperback edition, 1992, 171 pages with 12 stories, eight of which were previously published in literary journals. COWBOYS ARE MY WEAKNESS is not listed on the USA Today's Top 150 Best-Selling books.

These stories are about "real men" who run rapids at high water, rescue one dog a year from the humane society, love white-tailed deer more than women, stalk Dall deer for the kill, and run fast away from commitment. They are also about the ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent stories with deeper meanings
Aside from interesting characters, gorgeous descriptions of place, and touching insights into the nature of being a woman, Pam Houston also has a wonderful ability to spin a story. On the first reading, the stories appear to be interesting tales about men, women, and relationships. On the second reading, however, it begins to become clear that was it truly important is something much greater. Houston's writing is both funny and tender, and it draws the reader into a world where nothing is certain ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Accessible and literary
Houston shows us that short stories can be both entertaining and meaningful, both accessible and written in beautiful language. She has all of the skill of the best literary writers today combined with the down to earth pragmatism of the American West.

A great read for anyone, particularly for any woman.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Loved it
This is probably my favorite book- just goes to show you smart women can do some silly things when men are involved. I enjoyed the fast pace and wild settings of this book, a fun mix of adventure and love.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - How the West was Won
I love this book. It is so well-written, and Pam Houston literally opens up a whole world that I've never seen, as a big-city Easterner--and she does it with great affection for the West.

I am surprised by some of the negative reviews. While it's pretty clear that these stories are at least rooted in real events or inspired by real people, it is fiction. And, yes, her narrators definitely have issues with men--but her narrators are also well aware of that fact.

As for the question ... Read More
