Editorial Review:

Product Description:
When a twelve-year-old girl drowns in the Tamassee River and her body is trapped in a deep eddy, the people of the small South Carolina town that bears the river's name are thrown into the national spotlight. The girl's parents want to attempt a rescue of the body; environmentalists are convinced the rescue operation will cause permanent damage to the river and set a dangerous precedent. Torn between the two sides is Maggie Glenn, a twenty-eight-year-old newspaper photographer who grew up in the town and has been sent to document the incident. Since leaving home almost ten years ago, Maggie has done her best to avoid her father, but now, as the town's conflict opens old wounds, she finds herself revisiting the past she's fought so hard to leave behind.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Shall We Gather at the River?
Ron Rash's "Saints at the River" strikes many emotional chords with thoughtfulness and realism. Initially the story of one family's tragic loss -- their 12-year-old daughter to a whitewater river -- the plot evolves and weaves in the loss of another family, theirs caused by unhealed emotional wounds and the resulting bitterness. Environmentalism vs. livelihood, the main conflict in the novel, is handled by Mr. Rash with authority and sensibility. As a native of this area, I feel that the ... Read More

SAINTS AT THE RIVER

Little 12 year old Ruth Kowalsky drowns in the Tamassee River. Despite her mom's efforts, she is swept away, drowns, and her body is trapped in what is called a hydraulic. Her body cannot be recovered by divers as it is too dangerous and impossible, and her family wants to use other means. This sparks problems between the town-folk, the victim's parents, and environmentalists.

Enter Maggie, born and raised around the Tamasee River. She is now a photographer ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Wonderful Surprise!!
I had never read this author before this book and I was wonderfully surprised to find a new favorite author. Mr. Rash does a great job of capturing the real culture and language of the mountaion people while weaving a plot that will keep you glued to the pages until the end. I literally could not put this book down until I finished it. I've already ordered his other books.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod?
"Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod,
With its crystal tide forever
That flows by the throne of God?

Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of the Lord."

The words of that old hymn have always haunted me, maybe because a large portion of my childhood was spent on the banks of a beautiful river, tucked up in the mountains, where I ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Whose Side Would You Be On???...
This was a really good book. I must admit that I didn't like it as much as his first novel, 'One Foot In Eden', but it was good nonetheless. As I read this story I kept asking myself whose side I would be on, and just when I thought my mind was made up, the other side made a very good point, and a very sad one.

12 year-old Ruth Kowalsky drowned in the Tamassee River during a family outing, a river that is protected by the Wild and Scenic River Act. This means that nothing can be done to this river ... Read More
