Paul Cuffe who lived from 1759 to 1817 was a remarkable man. He was a self made man, a successful businessman and a philanthropist. He is the epitome of the American spirit. That he was a black man and the son of a freed slave and an Indian woman, makes his story that much more intriguing. In his time, he was the wealthiest man in the Westport, MA area which was in the shadow of the whaling and shipping port of New Bedford.
