Product Description: What does a typical three-year-old feel and think about? What can you anticipate from your six-year-old as he begins school, or if there is a death in the family? How will your ten-year-old respond to the news that her parents are divorcing? What does it mean that your eight-year-old seems to lie regularly?
By describing the developmental milestones of childhood, discussing specific questions and concerns and examining more troublesome problems, this invaluable book is designed to provide guidance for your day-to-day interactions with your child. It covers a range of practical issues, from choosing your baby's doctor to dealing with sleep problems, from bolstering a child's self-esteem to helping a child manage school difficulties, from selecting age-appropriate toys to helping your child cope with divorce, death, or other circumstances disrupting family life.
Your Child also moves beyond the day-to-day quandaries and concerns to those that represent more serious obstacles to a child's development and family life. The latter sections of the book provide extensive discussion of the developmental problems that usually require professional intervention, including emotional disorders, disruptive behavior disorders, persistent sleep difficulties, and psychotic disorders. The information provided in these sections will help you to recognize and understand these serious disorders and offers practical advice and useful information to guide you through the who, where, when, and why of getting help for your child.
Written by members of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the leading national association of physicians dedicated to the healthy mental development of children and adolescents, Your Child is the only reference to offer comprehensive and accessible information for parents on the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive development of children from infancy through the preadolescent years. No other book offers such thorough information on:
Understanding your child's developmental achievements in the day-to-day challenges of growing up
Determining when your child's behavior is normal and when it's a signal for professional help
Getting help for your child--including practical and reassuring advice on the many aspects of mental health treatment and the professions involved

Rating: - Devoid of depth or even much substance
The only type of person to whom I could possibly recommend this book is someone with no experience with children and who wants a "forest" level view of them from one source. There is nothing in this book for a parent in the thick of childrearing. Although they are completely out of date with respect to political correctness and product availability, the series from the Gesell Institute (Your One Year Old, Your Two Year Old, etc. etc.) provides immensely better insight into what is going on with ... Rating: - Your Child
Your Child is one of the best books I have ever picked up to read! My toddler and I were experiencing some difficulties at home, which is why I purchased the book. After reading this wonderful map through childhood, I believe we are both going to be just fine. It gives hope to parents that we really are doing a good job at raising our kids in todays world. And if we aren't, it gives great advise on how to seek help. This isn't your typical "self-help" book!
Rating: - best book on raising children that I have read so far
Your Child, provides the parent with a comprehensive guide on raising child.
Rating: - A terrific book!
I was very impressed by this book, and found its focus on child development fascinating. I was especially pleased to see this book avoid the trap of preaching to caregivers or espousing any specific how-to gimmicks. Instead, this book offers reasonable advice and a somewhat relaxed take on parenting, which I find quite welcome.
Rating: - A terrific book that covers all the bases.
I HIGHLY recommend this book. As a parent of three grown children and a new grandmother, I certainly thought I had read everything on this subject-- I practically raised my kids with my Dr. Spock in hand. But I decided to buy this new book for my daughter because it covers more than just runny noses and fevers. It's the only book I've found that gets you right inside your kids' heads and shows you what they're thinking about, and why they do what they do, at every age. Wish it had come out when ...
