Editorial Review:
Product Description: In 1997, more than four out of ten adults in America used at least one type of alternative care therapy. Thats 42 percent! From Aryuveda to reflexology, from black cohosh root to St. Johns wort, alternative medicine is a billion dollar business in the United States alone. Written by a health journalist in conjunction with Dr. Michael Jansen, President of the American Preventive Medical Association, this book is the only one that discusses the facts on which treatments work for common ailments, ranked by effectiveness; the inside scoop on popular therapies that are unproven or may be harmful; and the medical vs. alternative care debatewhat everyone needs to know.
Amazon.com Review: This no-baloney guidebook to the field of alternative medicine is notable not only for its thorough coverage of various practices (Ayurvedic medicine, yoga, biofeedback, acupuncture, osteopathic medicine, Qigong, Chinese medicine, herbs, hydrotherapy, reflexology, and chelation therapy, among others). It's unique, rather, for its symptom-by-symptom guide. For each disease or health problem, the authors list alternative-therapy treatments, along with information about what has been proven to work. For carpal tunnel syndrome, for instance, acupuncture, acupressure, and hydrotherapy are recommended, along with arnica and rhus toxicodendron for homeopathic remedies and vitamin B complex as a nutritional supplement.
In addition to the symptom-specific section, The Unofficial Guide informs you about the best ways to choose an alternative provider; gives tips on cutting the risk of illness in the first place with exercise, nutrition, and stress-reduction techniques; and offers advice on insurance issues. The chapter on navigating your way through the supplement aisle of your local drug or health-food store is especially enlightening.

Rating: - Excellent, Informative & Entertaining
What a fun resource on alternative treatments! I never knew the "downside" of herbs or other alternative treatments. The author gives both the positive and negative--help or hype--about the most commonly touted holistic treatments. I always thought herbs were ALL safe--because they are natural. Not so--and the author has scientific studies to back it up. Good for her! Also like the helpful sidebars on all pages--little known tips about complementary methods of staying well. Super!

This book gives the TRUTH and HYPE. Totally changed the way I think about taking herbs--yes, some herbs can kill you; some herbs may enhance optimal health. KNOW the difference. This book will show you how to be discerning about what you put into your body. Superbly written--easy to understand--factual & ... Read More
Rating: - Factual book on what we must know before we use holistic med
Excellent book by Debra Fulghum Bruce! Written in her fresh, easy-to-read style, Bruce's book gives the TRUTH--and dispels the hype--about tons of alternative treatments. READ THIS BOOK before you take herbs, use alternative medicine practitioners, or toss your Rx away! It may SAVE YOUR LIFE! Bruce contends that some alternative treatments are excellent for reducing stress--which could stop illness. But as she says, when you have "the big stuff"--see your medical doctor. Herbs probably can't stop ... Read More
Rating: - The real truth about alternative medicine
After reading a number of alternative medicine books with so-called "star" or "name" authors in the last year, it was a pleasure to read a book that gives honest appraisals of differing methods of curing diseases and conditions. For once, there's no author trying to "sell" his theory, along with his vitamins, classes, whatever. Now I feel I know what to ask for when I visit the vitamin store, and I have some good questions to ask on doctor visits.
