I don't know what was in the water in 1993, but, as someone who has read every year's Best American Poetry anthology, I can say this is definitely the best collection of all. Louise Gluck--who, I admit, I also quite love--does a near-perfect job in her selections. It is true that you will find all of the heavy-hitters here: Merwin, Kunitz, Ammons, Ashbery, Simic, Updike, mixed with the usual delightful surprises (Carolyn Creedon, the late Tim Dlugos, Alice Fogel, the sublime Robert Kelly.)
